Discussing relationships, boundaries and expectations

Talk about the arrangement you want instead of relying on assumptions.

Describe the relationship you are seeking

Words such as casual, exclusive and open can mean different things. Explain what you mean in everyday terms, including availability and the kind of contact you enjoy. Ask the other person what would suit them. A difference in expectations is useful information, even when there is attraction and a shared interest in meeting.

Keep every person involved in their own decisions

If an existing partner or couple is part of the situation, each person needs space to express their wishes. One person cannot give consent on behalf of another. Avoid presenting a new date with an arrangement they are expected to accept without discussion. A welcoming introduction includes the freedom to decline any part of the proposal.

Revisit agreements as circumstances change

A conversation about expectations is a starting point rather than a permanent contract. Check whether plans still feel comfortable when a relationship develops or someone expresses uncertainty. Agreement to chat, meet or date does not automatically include another activity. Respond to a change of mind with the same respect you would want for your own decisions.
